Scaling and Root Planing

Dental Services

Scaling and root planing is a focused periodontal treatment used to address gum infection and help the tissues around your teeth return to a healthier state. At Shpritz Family Dental, this deep-cleaning procedure is recommended when plaque and tartar extend below the gumline and create inflammation, bleeding, or deeper gum pockets that can’t be managed with a routine cleaning alone.

The treatment has two main steps. Scaling removes bacterial buildup and hardened deposits from the teeth and from underneath the gums, where harmful bacteria thrive. Root planing then smooths the root surfaces so the gums can heal more effectively and bacteria have a harder time attaching again. Together, these steps help reduce irritation, control infection, and support tighter, healthier gum attachment.

Scaling and root planing is usually completed by treating portions of the mouth at a time. Local anesthetic is often used to keep you comfortable. After your appointment, it’s normal to experience mild tenderness, slight bleeding, or temporary sensitivity—especially to cold. Your dental team will provide clear home-care instructions to support healing, and in some cases may recommend antimicrobial rinses or localized medications to help reduce bacteria.

Follow-up is an important part of success. Many patients benefit from periodontal maintenance visits scheduled more frequently than standard cleanings so the gumline can be monitored and bacteria can be kept under control. Good daily brushing and flossing (or other interdental cleaning tools) are also essential for maintaining results.

If you’ve noticed bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, or you’ve been told you have periodontal pockets, scaling and root planing may be an important step in protecting your teeth and supporting long-term gum health. Shpritz Family Dental is here to guide you through treatment and ongoing care.
