Sealants

Dental Services

Dental sealants are a protective coating placed on the chewing surfaces of back teeth to help prevent cavities. At Shpritz Family Dental, sealants are often recommended for children and teens, because newly erupted molars have deep grooves that can trap food and bacteria. Even with good brushing, those narrow fissures are difficult to clean thoroughly. Adults with cavity-prone molars or naturally deep grooves may benefit as well.

A sealant works like a thin shield. It flows into the pits and grooves of a molar and hardens, creating a smoother surface that helps block plaque and debris from settling where decay commonly starts. Sealants are especially helpful during the years when brushing technique is still developing or when diets include frequent snacks that increase cavity risk.

Placement is quick, comfortable, and doesn’t involve drilling. The tooth is cleaned and dried, then a gentle conditioning solution is applied so the sealant adheres securely. Next, the sealant material is brushed onto the enamel and set with a curing light. The entire process takes only a few minutes per tooth, and you can eat normally right away.

Sealants can last for several years, but they aren’t “set and forget.” During routine exams and cleanings, your dentist will check the sealants for wear or chipping. If a sealant becomes thin or damaged, it can usually be repaired or replaced easily.

While sealants provide strong protection, they work best as part of a complete prevention plan that includes fluoride, regular cleanings, and daily brushing and flossing. Shpritz Family Dental will evaluate your risk factors and help determine whether sealants are a smart choice for you or your child to help keep molars healthier for the long run.
