Dental crowns are custom restorations that fully cover a tooth to rebuild its strength, function, and appearance. At Shpritz Family Dental, crowns are often recommended when a tooth is too weakened for a filling alone—helping protect it from further damage and allowing you to bite and chew comfortably again.
A crown may be needed after a large cavity is treated, when a tooth has cracked or worn down, or when an older restoration no longer provides reliable support. Crowns are also commonly placed after root canal treatment to reinforce the tooth and reduce the chance of fracture. In addition to protection, crowns can improve the look of teeth that are misshapen, uneven, or severely stained by creating a more balanced, natural smile.
The process is typically completed over two visits. At your first appointment, the tooth is carefully shaped so the crown fits securely, and detailed impressions are taken—often digitally—for accuracy. A temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth and maintain normal function while your permanent crown is crafted. At the second visit, your dentist checks the fit, bite alignment, and appearance, then cements the final crown in place.
Modern crowns can be made from strong, aesthetic materials such as porcelain or ceramic, allowing them to blend with surrounding teeth. With consistent brushing and flossing, routine dental visits, and healthy habits, crowns can last for many years. Avoiding chewing ice, biting pens, or using your teeth as tools can also help protect your restoration.
Shpritz Family Dental focuses on precision and comfort throughout the process. If you have a tooth that feels weak, heavily filled, or damaged, a crown can be an excellent way to restore durability and confidence in your smile.
